INTRODUCTION:
Livestock sector occupies a pivotal position both as a source of providing animal protein and earning foreign exchange by exporting Livestock products. It inevitably plays an important role in the socio-economic life of the rural groups. This sector not only provides animal proteins and fat for human consumption but also provides bulk of motive power for agriculture operations. As a sub sector it comprises around 49 percent of the G.D.P. contributed by the Agriculture sector, whereas its contribution to the total G.D.P. is about 11 percent.
MISSION
To provide Veterinary health coverage to livestock, & poultry farmers
VISION
To make Lahore District self sufficient in its needs of milk, meat and eggs.
FUNCTIONS:
- To facilitate veterinary cover to the livestock population of the district.
- To safeguard the livestock population from infectious and contagious diseases of epidemic in nature through mass immunization.
- To provide extension/advisory services to the interested Livestock and Poultry farmers/breeders for the enhancement of productive and reproductive efficiency of Livestock and Poultry.
- To provide the Artificial Insemination services (A.I) i n non - descriptive local cows and buffaloes for the improvement of their genetic makeup / potential.
- To provide treatment / health cover during the genital / venereal ailments in animals.
- To develop rural poultryand promote commercial Poultry farming. on
ANIMAL HEALTH COMPONENT:
The main function of this largest component of Livestock Wing is to provide the veterinary cover by facilitating treatment, vaccination and advisory services to the farmers, at their doorsteps. The provision of health facilities to the livestock is accompanied through a chain of 24 veterinary hospitals/dispensaries and 26 veterinary centers through out the District, manned by the qualified veterinarians and veterinary assistants.
BREED IMPROVEMENT COMPONENT:
This component is functioning for the achievement of objective to produce better productive future generations / breed of dairy animals. A total of nine Artificial Insemination centers and seven sub-centers manned by skilled veterinarians and Artificial Insemination Technicians are facilitating Artificial Insemination (A.I.) services to the livestock keepers, farmers and breeders, by disseminating the superior germ plasma of local, as well as, the exotic semen of the Friesian and Jersey breeds of cattle, to achieve the objectives of high milk and meat yield (production), in the district and for up gradation of non-descript, low productive indigenous stock.
POULTRY PRODUCTION COMPONENT:
The function of this component is to make efforts for the enhancement of eggs and poultry meat production, by promoting the rural and commercial poultry farming, treatment of sick poultry birds/flock, prophylactic vaccination in birds and providing prompt disease diagnostic facilities and imparting training to the farmers.
There are Six Veterinary Officers and six Veterinary Assistants deputed to pay regular visits to the farms under their jurisdiction, to provide vaccination and treatment cover at the farmers door step.
FOOD SECURITY COMPONENT:
Prior to devolution, the Veterinary Department was functioning under the Administrative control of Director, Veterinary Services, Ex-Metropolitan Corporation, Lahore. Now the same assignment has been entrusted to the District Officer Livestock, City District Government, Lahore, as Food Security component that conducts raids to control the quality and prices of the meat and manages the two Gowalas Colonies in the district through the Administrators.
ASSIGNMENTS OF LIVESTOCK DEPARTMENT:
- To provide veterinary coverage to livestock and poultry farmers.
- To conducts radio talks to create awareness among general public. regarding health of livestock and poultry sector.
- To help farmers in getting feasibilities required for getting loans in livestock sector.
