INTRODUCTION:

Pakistan , like most of the developing countries, suffers from protein deficiency in the diet of the people. The problem is becoming more and more acute with the increase in population. Possibilities of increasing meet production are limited because of scanty pasture space and competition of animals with humans for diet. Increase in fish production through aquaculture (fish culture) could be an important source of animals protein. A significant contribution has been made in this regard by the Department of Fisheries, by making the masses feel the importance of fish culture on scientific lines.

To enhance fish production by increasing per acre yield of fish.

FUNCTIONS DEVOLED IN THE DISTRICT:

• Provision of extension services in the private sector.
• Supervision of Fish seed production and its distribution

Objectives

Provide guidance to fish farming community for getting better yield per Unit area of fishponds.

Help new fish farmers in feasibility studies and provide technical guidance for Raising fishponds

Provide possible services for running various tests to ascertain the level of good and Other essential ingredients fish ponds for health fish culture.

Functions

• Extension services in private sector.
• Lease of dishing rights, conversation, management and promotion of fisheries in water areas except rivers, canals and barrages/ponds areas, which have no boundaries.
• Training through open training schools.
• Issuance of district angling licenses.
• Local publicity and awareness.
• Enforcement of fisheries enactment in their respective domain.
• Fish stock replacement in natural water bodies in their respective domains.
• Supervision of seed production, distribution and supply programme at all
• Seed production units/hatcheries in their respective domains.
• Aqua culture development activities.
• Collection of statistical data on fish and fisheries in their respective domains.

Procedure

Simple hand writing application serves the purpose of the applicant to avail the services and facilities available with the fisheries wing of city district government Lahore that includes.

1. Survey of land for its suitability for fish culture.
2. Preparation of feasibility studies free of cost.
3. Preparation of ponds, applications of manure, fertilizers, stocking of fish seed, water quality parameters, applications of food formulae, growth monitoring, testnetting, harvesting of fish and other relevant information helpful for enhancing fish production.
4. Applications may be launched in the office of District Officer Fisheries, 159-B, A-Block New Chauburgi Park, and Lahore.

ASSIGNMENTS:

Main Activities

1. Extension Services Provided to the Private Fish Farms:

Private fish farmers are contacted through personnel visit at their farms and provided technical guidance.

2. Preparation of Feasibility of New Fish Farm:

The farmers, who are interested in establishing new fish farms at their land, are assisted in evaluation of their resources such as soil type, water quality and financial status and are helped in development of new farms.

3. Services For Stocking Of Good Quailty Fish Seed:

Good quality fish seed is arranged for the private fish farmers through provincial hatcheries.

4. Monitoring Of Growth Rate:

Random checking of growth of fishes is called monitoring of growth rate. Through this activity farmers get awareness about growth rate of culturable fishes at different times. They can make arrangement for pond fertility after seeing the result.

5. Water Analysis For Improvement In Water Quality:

Fisheries staff visits the farms and analyze the pond water. After analysis they give recommendations about maintaining of optimum level of dissolved oxygen, pH, Total Alkalinity, Hardness etc.

6. Conservation Of Village Ponds Into Incom Generatin Units Through Fish Culture:

A number of Ponds in villages, where fish culture is not being practiced, can be converted into income generating units through fish culture practices. Presently these can be converted into fish pond creating a source of income. For that training is being imparted to farmers.
